The drawings in Cultural Values are developed using the pages from an extensive collection of vintage world history books found in a second hand bookstore. The text reveals topics such as: human values, language of protest, the importance of art in society, equality, urban growth and social responsibility. All of these ideas prevail in the broader context of our current daily lives and are particularly relevant in modern times.
In order to begin the making process, the artist chooses a single word from each page. The association of text with form and color is the method used to visualize an intuitive composition that might illustrate this particular word forming a type of “visual vocabulary”. These symbolic drawings can then be elevated to another level of realization in other larger paintings and drawings. The pages are often taken out of the larger context of the book series in order to stand alone in representing each word or concept as an individual thought.
